Eileen Estrada

Eileen has sent us a book entitled Hazardous Materials and Waste Management, otherwise known as a HAZMAT teaching tool. Eileen has taught us about the culture of Japan as well as Brazil and helped us in deciding which companies to target and how our marketing strategy must play out. Eileen and our team have had many phone conferences and we e-mail back and forth. Eileen has provided us with tons of information and helps us to research our questions concerning offloading vessels and how they operate. She has explained what kind of needs the vessels have such as the need of a strong unbreakable storage container like Plexiglas to store the product aboard the boats. Eileen is a great help and a very nice person to work with.

Marc Zimmer is our Green Fluorescent Protein scientist. He is the author of the highly acclaimed book “Glowing Genes” which we are reading in class and learning about GFP which is an essential part of our project. Marc is now a professor at Southern Connecticut State University and has continuously aided us with facts about GFP and on how to manipulate the glowing gene into the genome of our bacterium Pseudomonas putida. Marc answers a lot of our scientific questions and if he does not know the answer off hand he find someone who does and gets back to us with information as fast as he can.

He has provided us with facts about different classes of oil and unique facts about them such as toxicity levels and their physical properties. This is important to our project because different oils require different methods of cleaning. Some oils are more harmful to the environment than others. Mr. Veillette is the go-to guy when it comes to questions about oil.

He has been twenty years of experience working in an actual lab. He has a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biology; he has begun teaching medical microbiology at the University of Bridgeport and owns two medical labs. Mr. Sanz has provided us with the use of three Spectronic 20 Spectrophotometers so we could learn about the electromagnetic spectrum and the lambda max of GFP which will be important while developing our project.
